Senior Leadership

Salem Afeworki, LEED GA, ENV SP, EcoDistricts AP - Founder

Salem Afeworki, LEED GA, ENV SP, EcoDistricts AP is the Founder of Value Sustainability, a leading provider of sustainability, climate change and community engagement advisory services to public and private sector clients. She is responsible for the firm’s integrated strategy to deliver customer solutions to meet their sustainability challenges and operate in a way that advances environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic success. Applying her corporate and consulting experience to her client’s priorities, she challenges her clients to set increasingly higher sustainability targets that grow their business and make a positive impact in society.

Prior to that, Salem has held numerous management and senior consultant roles in engineering and financial services firms, both in the U.S and internationally. She was awarded the 2017 EcoLeader award by USGBC-Orange County; the 2016 Emergent Leadership Award in the Category of Engineering by Urban Land Institute Orange County/ Inland Empire and has also received a Certificate of Recognition by Orange County's Third District Supervisor Todd Spitzer. She began her career with the United Nations and holds a BA in Communication and MSc in Environmental Management & Auditing from Universidad de Leon, Spain. She has completed multiple leadership and Sustainable Environmental Management programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), UC Berkeley and Central European University in Hungary.

Salem is a primary member of Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) Sustainability Council, and served at the City of Irvine’s Green Ribbon Committee. She was a 1 Hotels fellow at Environmental Entrepreneurs/ Natural Resources Defence Council and a United Nations Sustainability Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) Local Pathway Fellow. She is also active in various industry groups in the United States, including the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE), Urban Land Institute (ULI OC/IE) and Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS-OC).
