Leadership

Salem Afeworki, LEED Green Associate, ENV SP - Founder & Program Director

Salem Afeworki, LEED Green Associate, ENV SP is the Founder and Program Director of Value Sustainability, a leading provider of advisory services in sustainability, climate change and community engagement. She is responsible for the company’s integrated strategy to deliver customer solutions to meet their sustainability challenges and operate in a way that advances environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic success. She seeks to further embed sustainability into the way firms/agencies do business and operate around the world. Applying her corporate and consulting experience to her client’s sustainability priorities, she challenges her clients to set increasingly higher sustainability targets that grow their business and make a positive impact in society.

Prior to that, Salem has held numerous management and senior consultant roles in engineering and financial services firms, both in the U.S and internationally. She was awarded the 2016 Urban Land Institute Orange County/Inland Empire - Emergent Leadership Award for the Category of Engineering and a Certificate of Recognition by Orange County's Third District Supervisor Todd Spitzer.

She began her career with the United Nations and holds a BA in Communication and MSc in Environmental Management & Auditing from Universidad de Leon, Spain. She has completed multiple leadership and Sustainable Environmental Management programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), UC Berkeley and Central European University in Hungary.

Salem is the 2016 Climate Adaptation Fellow for Emergent Leaders in Environment and Energy Policy (ELEEP) – a joint program between Atlantic Council and European Union - whose objective is to foster transatlantic collaboration in environmental sustainability & clean energy. She has also been selected as 2016 Atlantic Dialogues Emerging Leader by the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the OCP Policy Center, and will actively take part in The Atlantic Dialogues Conference (Marrakesh, Morocco). This global dialogue includes policy workshops, creative thinking, professional leadership training, peer-to-peer learning, and opportunities for networking and exchange. Salem is a member of various industry groups in the United States, including the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE), Urban Land Institute (ULI OC/IE) and Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS-OC).
